The Office of Family Assistance within the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services produces reports detailing the demographics of beneficiaries of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. The OFA published a report in 2012 entitled Characteristics and Financial Circumstances of TANF Recipients, Fiscal Year 2010.
The 2012 report asserted that there were, on average, just shy of 1,850,000 families receiving TANF benefits each month in 2010. Among TANF families, the racial breakdown was split roughly in thirds between white, African-American, and Hispanic families. The average amount paid to a family receiving TANF benefits was around $400 per month.
