What is a Federal Student Aid PIN?

A Federal Student Aid Personal Identification Number is a four-digit number used to identify a person on United States Department of Education websites. When people enter their name, birth date, social security number and PIN, they let the website know who they are so they can access personal information, such as their Application for Federal Student Aid.

Anyone can apply for a PIN on the U.S. Department of Education website. PINs expire if they are not used for 18 months in a row. The Federal Student Aid PIN is also used as an electronic signature to sign legal documents. Therefore, giving the PIN to someone else is not allowed. Parents who need to sign their children's forms need to apply for their own PIN.
