When are federal taxes due?

Federal income tax returns are usually due on April 15 each year. It may be extended to the next business day if April 15 is a weekend. Payment of any balance owed to the IRS is also due at this time unless a payment arrangement has been put in place.

However, the IRS does offer extensions for taxpayers who are unable to file their federal income taxes by this date. In order to receive an extension, a taxpayer must submit form 4868 by April 15. This form grants taxpayers an automatic six month extension on filing their returns, making the due date October 15.
