Female elephants are called cows. Male elephants are called bulls. An entire group of elephants are reffered to as a heard. Elephants are very intelligent animals with complex social structures.
Both the female Asian and African elephant is referred to as a cow. The cows of the herd have a 22-month gestation period before they give birth to a single calf that weighs close to 200 pounds. Cows grow to be about 15,000 pounds, can reach heights of up to 11 feet and live on average for 50 to 60 years unless threatened by ivory poachers. Because of its size, the elephant does not have many natural enemies in the wild.
