The molecular formula Fe(OH)2 corresponds to the compound iron (II) hydroxide. The compound is formed through the interaction of one iron atom and two hydroxide atoms.
Iron (II) hydroxide is a white, inorganic solid with a molecular weight of 89.86 daltons. As is the case with some other transition metals, iron ions can exist in different charged states. Iron can take on a charge of either positive two or positive three. The molecular formula Fe(OH)2 has the iron ion in the positive two charged state. If the iron existed in the positive three charged state, the formula would be Fe(OH)3 and the molecule would be renamed iron (III) hydroxide.
