What is fireproof drywall?

There is no such thing as fireproof drywall. There are, however, several types of fire-resistant drywall that are chemically treated to increase fire resistance. Such drywall is also known as type X drywall in the industry.
Fireproof drywall means that the drywall completely resists burning. Type X drywall does not completely resist burning, but it is thicker than regular drywall, and it is treated so that it stays intact, containing the spread of fire for a specific period of time. Commonly, a 1/2-inch-thick type X panel has a fire-resistance rating of 30 minutes, and a 5/8-inch-thick type X panel has a fire-resistance rating of 60 minutes.
