Apple debuted the first iPod to the public on October 23, 2001. Internally, the project was referred to as Dulcimer and was conducted under the leadership of Tony Fadell, who conceptualized the device in February of 2001.

Tony Fadell was hired by Apple in February of 2001, and he created the concept and the initial design for the iPod. The first iteration of the device was released in late 2001, but the product did not catch on until later versions introduced Windows compatibility.

Fadell was promoted to vice president in 2004 and senior vice president in charge of the iPod division in 2006. He left the company in 2008 to found Nest Labs, which was then acquired by Google.
