Who was the first President of United States?

George Washington was chosen as the first president of the United States of America. He served two terms from 1789 to 1797. He presided over the process of writing the United States Constitution, which replaced the Articles of Confederation.

Washington was born on Feb. 22, 1732, in Virginia. Before becoming president, he was the leader of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War.

Washington set many traditions in motion with the way he conducted himself. For example, he preferred to be called "Mr. President" rather than other names the Senate proposed. He stayed away from monarchical traditions such as appearing in military uniform for functions.
