Fisher & Paykel was founded in 1934. It began when a New Zealand woman asked her husband to import a refrigerator from the United States. This sparked the beginning of the business, which imported refrigerators and washing machines into the country.
In 1938, New Zealand banned appliance imports, prompting Fisher & Paytel to begin making and selling appliances within the country. In 1955, the business acquired New Zealand's leading oven range manufacturer and expanded its product line.
As of February 2015, Fisher & Paykel sells appliance in more than 50 countries. The company also operates community-based charity programs, including flood relief in Australia.
