A five-star general is also referred to as a "General of the Army" and holds the second-highest rank in the U.S. Army. This designation is superior to other general positions and is typically conferred during wartime. The rank has only been bestowed on five men.

The official designation for the five-star general position came into place in 1944. Since 1944, this designation has been awarded to the following men: George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Arnold and Omar Bradley. The only rank higher than a five-star general is the "General of the Armies" designation, which has only been given out twice.
