What is flex time?

Flextime is an alternative work schedule in which an employer gives workers some control over their work hours. In a typical flextime setup, employees are required to be at work for certain core hours, but they can flex their schedule to earlier or later times.
Flextime schedules are normally worked out between an employee and his manager. The core hour requirement ensures that all employees in the company or department are around for a period of time to collaborate or meet. In a company with core hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., a worker may work from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
