Does the FMCSA allow the public to look up motor carrier numbers?

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration numbers, or DOT numbers, are publicly available for search at Safer.FMCSA.DOT.gov. The search function allows US DOT numbers, MC numbers or company name as acceptable methods of searching the database.
The search results list companies that do business under a different name, showing parent companies for all records. The FMCSA/DOT database keeps track of overall safety record, driver violations and collisions. In addition, the search shows what a particular carrier is authorized to haul, whether or not they are for hire, and where the carrier is authorized to do business. Details of the company are also available, including contact information.
