Food sources of chloride include table salt or sea salt and many vegetables such as tomatoes, celery, lettuce and olives. Chloride is also found in seaweed and rye.
Chloride is essential for maintaining the balance of fluids in the body. Most Americans get more chloride than necessary due to the popular use of salt in the diet. Excessive chloride intake is associated with high blood pressure as well as retention of fluid in those with existing conditions such as congestive heart failure.
Loss of fluids results in an insufficient amount of chloride in the body. There are several causes of this, including excessive sweating and medications.
