Fats, oils and sweets appear at the top of the 1992 United States Department of Agriculture Food Guide Pyramid. The USDA replaced the Food Guide Pyramid with MyPyramid on April 19, 2005 and Choose My Plate in 2011.
The Food Guide Pyramid contains six sections representing six food groups and the recommended number of daily servings for each category. The Choose My Plate icon encourages Americans to put more grains and vegetables on their plates along with smaller servings of fruits, proteins and dairy. Choose My Plate does not account for healthy fats in a well-balanced diet and does not encourage Americans to choose whole grains over refined versions or lean meats over fatty cuts.
