When a person's blood sugar drops less than 70 milligrams, at least 15 to 30 grams of carbohydrates should be consumed to raise the blood glucose levels, according to the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Candies, sweets and fruits help to boost sugar levels within the bloodstream.

Additional foods that help to raise blood sugar levels include honey, jam or jelly, as well as gum drops and jelly beans, according to the UCSF Medical Center. Natural sweeteners in fruits can also help to increase sugar within the blood stream, including small apples, oranges, half of a banana, a half cup of applesauce, 15 grapes or 2 tablespoons of raisins.

Beverages that help to raise blood glucose levels include a half cup of apple, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, grape or cranberry juice, according to the UCFS Medical Center. A half cup of regular soda with sugar or fat-free milk provides a needed boost of sugar to the system. Some people may also opt to ingest a tube of glucose gel or three to four glucose tablets when blood sugar levels drop.

Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar levels include headache, sweating, dizziness, shaking, increased heartbeat and anxiety, according to the UCSF Medical Center.
