What is foraminal stenosis?

Foramen are openings in spinal bones that allow nerves from the spinal cord to branch into the arms, legs and other parts of the body. Cedars-Sinai defines foraminal stenosis as a condition in which the foramen are clogged with bony spurs, which press on the nerves.

Cedars-Sinai explains that the symptoms of foraminal stenosis include numbness, burning sensations, tingling and a pins-and-needles sensation in the arms and legs. Diagnosis is via an X-ray, MRI imaging, a CT scan, a myelogram or a bone scan. Treatments include pain-relieving drugs, restricted activity, braces and physical therapy. Foraminal stenosis is correlated with age and with musculoskeletal conditions, such as arthritis.
