Aéropostale was founded by R.H. Macy & Co. in the 1980s. Originally, Aéropostale was an in-store brand sold at Macy's, but in 1987, Macy's opened an independent Aéropostale store in West Los Angeles, California. Aéropostale focuses on trendy, casual apparel for young men and women.
The Aéropostale stores and clothing line were sold to Bear Stearns Merchant Banking in 1995, and the company went public in 2002. The chain expanded into clothing for children beginning in 2009, with the P.S. from Aéropostale stores and was selling clothes for children from 5 to 17 as of 2011. In 2013, Fortune magazine named Aéropostale one of the best 100 companies to work for.
