Truett Cathy founded Chick-fil-A in the early 1960s and opened the first restaurant location in 1967. As of 2014, Chick-fil-A has expanded to over 1,900 locations in 42 states and Washington, D.C., and sales have topped $6 billion annually.
Cathy opened the precursor to Chick-fil-A in 1946. Dwarf Grill, located in Hapeville, Georgia, was where Cathy invented the chicken sandwich that has become the staple of Chick-fil-A's menu. In 2014, Cathy died, leaving behind one of the largest quick-service restaurant chains in America. The restaurant chain has drawn scrutiny due to Cathy's conservative beliefs and positions on issues related to same-sex couples.
