The founders of the colony of Connecticut are believed to be Thomas Hooker and John Haynes, along with about 100 other Puritans. Thomas Hooker was a well-known Puritan minister, and John Haynes was a governor.
Colonists were living in what is now present-day Connecticut as early as 1635. It is widely believed that they sought out the area because they were looking for more freedom and financial opportunity. However, the English struggled over ownership with the Dutch until 1636, when England eventually gained permanent control of the colony. On March 3, 1636, the colony was officially recognized as a settlement for a Puritan congregation.
