Are foxes nocturnal?

Foxes are mostly nocturnal, but they can and do come out during the daytime hours, if necessary, to find food or because their dens are disturbed. Those in urban areas may be more prone to seeing foxes in the daytime because the foxes have less of a natural habitat.
The fox's primary hunting time is at night, which is one reason the after-dark hours are also its most active time. Foxes are fairly varied in their diets and eat other nocturnal animals, such as rabbits and mice, as well as daytime dwellers like birds and squirrels. Foxes may also eat berries and nuts, depending on what is available.
