What is a Freestyle CVT?

A Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT, is a type of transmission used on the Ford Freestyle crossover vehicle that uses a pair of cone-like pulleys rather than a traditional gearbox to transfer power from the engines to the wheels. Most Freestyles are fitted with the ZF Batavia CFT30 transmission.
Continuously Variable Transmissions are so named because the cable connecting the two pulleys in the transmission can change its position to alter the effective gear ratio between the pulley connected to the motor and the one connected to the drive wheels. This gives a CVT an effectively infinite range of gear ratios and improves fuel economy over standard automatic transmissions.
