The French flag is often referred to as the tricolor in English or 'les couleurs' in French. It consists of three vertical bands of different colors.
The three equally sized, vertical bands of the French flag are blue, white and red. The blue band is on the left or the hoist side, the red band is on the right and the white band is in the middle.
In France, it is known as 'le drapeau' or 'le drapeau francais,' which translates into "the flag" or "the French flag," respectively. The current design was first adopted in 1794. Between 1850 and 1830, the years of the Bourbon Restoration, a white flag was used. In 1830, the tricolor was readopted.
