What does fungus need to survive?

Fungi are aerobic organisms; they must have free oxygen to survive. They cannot create their own food using the sun like a plant does. Fungi must get their energy from living off of dead plants and other fungi.
Fungi require their food to be in the form of a solution. They secure food through the action of enzymes, which digest the food to be absorbed through their hyphal walls. Fungi can be as small as a single-celled organism or as large as a 3.5-mile-wide mushroom. This mushroom can be found covering 2,200 acres in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon.
