Gandhi was first arrested for failing to carry an identification card known as a "pass." Gandhi was arrested on January 10, 1908, but was released a month later.
Gandhi was arrested again, in 1922, for inciting people to rebel against the British authorities. Gandhi was sentenced to six years in prison, but he was released two years later, due to a medical condition. He stayed out of the spotlight for many years, but by the 1930s, he began participating in campaigns rebelling against the government's new tax on salt. Four years later, Gandhi retired to work with the people of rural communities.
