Does garlic grow underground?

Garlic is usually planted in the fall or winter, and it grows up to 4 inches underground. The leaves that sprout on top of the soil turn brown in late summer, indicating that it is time to pull up the garlic bulbs.

A layer of mulch made from grass clippings or chopped leaves controls weeds and keeps the garlic bulbs from being forced above ground by soil that freezes and thaws. A 6-inch layer of mulch is recommended for the coldest climates, according to Burpee. The mulch should be removed in June and watering should stop, allowing the soil to dry before harvest.
