Guillain Barre syndrome is a neurological disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. GBS is a rare syndrome, affecting one in 100,000 people.
GBS can affect anyone, at any age and of either sex, notes the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The symptoms include symmetrical weakness and tingling sensations, starting in the legs and spreading to the upper body and arms. The weakness may progress until the person becomes totally paralyzed. GBS can potentially be life-threatening, as it can interfere with breathing, heart beat and blood pressure.
