What is a geodesic dome?

A geodesic dome refers to a spherical structure built from interlocking triangles. In this construction, the framework created by triangles offers greater structural strength with minimal material usage.
Geodesic domes consist of smaller, interlocking triangles forming a lattice or shell. As the triangles are put together, they form a spherical shape that, when enclosed, forms a complete dome.
First conceived by Walther Bauersfeld following World War I, the geodesic dome construction has served many purposes, including planetariums, observatories, storage facilities and residential homes. Perhaps the most famous example of a geodesic dome is Spaceship Earth at Epcot in Walt Disney World in Florida.
