Northern Indiana is home to many Amish and Mennonite communities and is frequently known as Amish country. This area includes the Indiana towns of Elkhart, Bristol, Goshen, Middlebury, Nappanee, Shipshewana, Wakarusa and many surrounding areas.

Amish families of Swiss decent first settled in the area near Middlebury, Indiana in 1841. Visitors can view Indiana's Amish country by traveling on the Heritage Trail, a national roadway surrounding Amish communities. This roadway offers very scenic views and direct access to many of the Amish areas in northern Indiana. Guided tours and more information about northern Indian's Amish communities are available at Amishcountry.org.
