The Commonwealth of Australia was initially British colonies established in the late 1700s. These colonies officially federated in 1901, creating the Commonwealth of Australia. As of 2015, Australia is the sixth-largest country in the world by total area. It also has the world's twelfth-largest economy, making it one of the wealthiest developed countries. Additionally, Australia has the second-highest Human Development Index, only behind Norway, deeming it a country that has high quality of life, civil liberties, education and health.
