How did Lincolnton, North Carolina get it's name?

The town of Lincolnton, North Carolina, was named after Major General Benjamin Lincoln, an American patriot in the Revolutionary War. The surrounding Lincoln County was named in his honor as well.

The land that was later named Lincolnton was the site of the 1780 Battle of Ramsour's Mill, where a militia of about 400 American patriots defeated about 1,300 loyalist militiamen.

At the close of the war, General George Washington chose Lincoln to receive a sword, symbolic of surrender, from British General Charles Cornwallis at the 1781 Battle of Yorktown. Lincoln went on to serve as the U.S. secretary of war from 1781 to 1783.
