The southeast region of the United States is unique, among other areas, in its history, being home to some of the nation's oldest communities; and in its geography, featuring the continent's longest river and largest subtropical wilderness area. Twelve states make up the region, and each one contributes to the region's distinctive nature.

Some definitions of the southeast region include only seven states: Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina.
