New Mexico is called the "Land of Enchantment" because of its beautiful scenery and rich history, according to NetState.com. The nickname was first placed on license plates in 1941 and was adopted as the official state nickname in 1999.

Some of New Mexico’s unofficial nicknames offer a more detailed description of the state.
