How do you protect yourself from vacation scams?

To avoid vacation scams, the Federal Trade Commission warns consumers against trusting phone calls, texts or mailings that promise free travel or invite them to join a travel club. Friends and family members, travel apps and online reviews are all recommended sources for tips about reliable vacation providers.
The FTC recommends consumers call to confirm their reservations and request details about cancellation policies, resort fees and any promised luxury or five-star perks. If offered travel insurance, consumers can confirm insurers are licensed by checking with the U.S. Travel Insurance Association. When ready to book, paying via credit card allows travelers to dispute charges if problems arise.
