Sudan, a country in northeastern Africa, is south of Egypt, east of Chad, north of South Sudan and west of Ethiopia, Eritrea and the Red Sea. Prior to the independence of South Sudan in 2011, the southern border of Sudan was shared with Congo, Uganda and Kenya.
The northern half of Sudan is situated on the eastern end of the Saharan desert belt that stretches across northern Africa. The capitol city, Khartoum, slightly east of the center of the geographical country, is at the boundary between the Saharan and Sahel zones. The Sahel zone is a region of semi-arid tropical savanna.
