Florida, the southernmost state in the United States, is a peninsula that borders the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. The capital of Florida is Tallahassee, and the state is home to more than 19 million people, as of 2015.
Florida has nearly 1,400 miles of coastline, the most of any state. It was the first part of the United States to be visited by Europeans. The earliest known explorer, Ponce de Leon, arrived in 1513. Nicknamed "The Sunshine State," Florida was admitted to the Union on March 3, 1845, as the 23rd state in the United States. Tourism makes up the largest sector of the economy, followed by agriculture.
