Georgia's DeKalb County Jail is not classified as maximum security. However, it does have a small maximum security cell house capable of holding six inmates at a time.

The function of the DeKalb County Jail is a transitional one, holding prisoners pending court verdicts.

There have been a number of escapes and attempted escapes from the prison. In 2003, two inmates escaped by making a hole in the roof and descending 100 feet on bed sheets that were tied together. One inmate managed to get away from the jail, while the other was injured and subsequently captured when the bed sheets came apart. In the same year, another man scaled the jail's fence and escaped.
