What is a giant Venus fly trap?

A giant Venus flytrap is a large carnivorous plant with animate leaves that trap insect prey. As used by botanists and collectors, the "giant" part of the name generally refers to the size of the leaf traps and not to the entire height of the plant.

Although its traps are unusually large, the low giant Venus flytrap is not noted for growing much taller or shorter than any other cultivar of flytrap. Most flytraps grow only as tall as 5 inches; the low giant grows to a maximum height of just under 6 inches. The B52 Venus flytrap, another cultivar, has traps up to 2 1/4 inches long. This is in contrast to the average trap length of slightly under an inch.
