How do I give a verbal warning?

Issuing a verbal warning involves sharing details of a workplace problem with an employee and offering specific directives on how and when the behavior must change. Documenting the warning for personnel files is also common.
- Outline the problem
Explain the concerning behavior to the employee. If a worker is constantly late, for instance, explain the details, and indicate what problems this causes.
- Offer directions on change
Communicate the expectations clearly. Reference a policy manual or other guide when possible. Indicate what behaviors are expected, what resources are available and by what date the change is expected.
- Document the meeting
In many organizations, it is common to document a verbal warning. A formal verbal warning is often a precursor to a more significant written warning.
