Glucose is an organic compound, as its structure contains atoms of carbon, which are the main constituents of organic molecules. Glucose is specifically a monosaccharide that belongs to the group of carbohydrates, one of the four types of organic molecules.
As a monosaccharide, glucose has a formula in which for every carbon atom, there are two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. The formula of glucose is C6H12O6. Sometimes referred to as dextrose, glucose is a very important source of energy for animals and plants. Glucose is also found in the bloodstream, and its concentration, called glycemia, is used to diagnose and monitor diabetes.
