Mealworms, maggots and spoiled meat are good baits to catch armadillo, according to Havahart. Armadillos also respond well to extremely ripe fruit.

The most effective way to use armadillo bait depends on the type of trap. When using a single-door trap, the bait should be on the far side of the trigger plate, as far away from the walls as possible. If the bait is too close to one of the walls, the armadillo may be able to extract it without entering the trap.

Placing the bait beyond the trigger plate also works with dual-door traps. Other placement options include tying the bait to the trap ceiling or burying it beneath the trigger mechanism.
