The DASH, or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, diet program is a lifelong approach to healthy eating designed to lower or prevent high blood pressure. It encourages dieters to avoid sodium consumption and eat foods high in nutrients such as calcium, potassium and magnesium, states Mayo Clinic.
In addition to restricting sodium, the DASH diet is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, explains Mayo Clinic. It includes lots of vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products and whole grains. Fish, poultry and legumes are eaten in moderation, and the diet limits red meat, alcohol and sweets. Over time, following the DASH diet can lower systolic blood pressure as much as 12 points.
