Fiber-rich foods include beans, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains such as cereals, breads and pastas. WebMD recommends eating at least 25 to 35 grams of dietary fiber each day to control symptoms of diverticulitis.
The Mayo Clinic lists several common symptoms of diverticulitis, including constipation, abdominal tenderness and nausea. Dietary fiber helps control these symptoms by adding bulk and softness to stools, making them easier to pass through the colon. In addition to eating fiber-rich foods, Stanford Health Care recommends drinking at least 8 cups of water per day and limiting consumption of fatty, sugary and processed foods.
