What are some good mystery writers?

Two of the best-known writers of mysteries were the American Edgar Allan Poe and Englishman Wilkie Collins. Poe made his name as a poet, but moved on to short stories that blended horror and mystery elements. Collins' works were chiefly novels.

Poe's most famous short story was, perhaps, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," written in 1841. Collins wrote "The Woman in White" in 1860 and followed this successful work with "The Moonstone," sometimes described as the first true detective novel. T. S. Eliot called it "the first and greatest of English detective novels," though Charles Felix's "The Notting Hill Mystery" is now believed to be the first novel ever published in this genre.
