A tip for attracting butterflies to a garden is to keep chemical pesticides and fertilizers to a minimum or use organic alternatives. A container, such as a bird bath, filled with fresh water also can draw butterflies and other pollinators to an area. Planting a variety of plants that flower in succession, rather than all at once, keeps butterflies coming back throughout the season. Some other plants that can attract butterflies include calendula, daylilies, cosmos, marigold and zinnia.
