Samples of a commercial driver's required Federal Motor Carrier Safety Associate hours-of-duty driver's log are available at FMCSA.DOT.gov and CDLDigest.com. An example of a daily vehicle inspection report, also required to be kept in a log book for commercial vehicles, is available at FLHSMV.gov.
Both the DVIR and the hours-of-duty logs must be filled out daily for commercial vehicle drivers and kept for a specified number of days in the commercial vehicle. The hours-of-duty log requires drivers to note the total amount of time spent working on a given day and the amount of time spent actually driving. The DVIR is a record of the commercial vehicle's mechanical defects and repair dates.
