Some good tips for winterizing roses are preparing the roses after frost has occurred but before a hard freeze. In the early fall discontinue nitrogen fertilizers and clear away debris like dead leaves from around the plant.

Other rose winterizing tips include pruning and preparing the canes. Remove any dead or diseased branches, but prune all canes back to a length between 30 and 36 inches. Use white wood glue or wax to protect any large cuts. Bundle the canes, and tie them together at the top to prevent wind damage.

To retain heat, make a soil mound around the rose plant that is one foot high and one foot wide. Bring the soil from another area, and do not take it from around the roots.
