How do you get a Google phone number?

A Google Voice account is required to receive a Google phone number. When using Google Voice Lite, opt to add a Google number to the account by clicking the Get a Google Number link in Google Voice Settings.

When signing up for a Google Voice account, there is a choice between using an already existing phone number or receiving a new number from Google. When choosing the option for a new number, there is an option to search for and choose a new Google number. Enter a PIN number and forwarding phone number when setting up the new Google phone number.
