A republic government is a state in which the ultimate power is vested in the people who vote, and that power is carried out by representatives chosen by the citizens. It is a state in which the government leader is voted upon rather then ascending by inheritance or appointment.
A republic government derives authority through election by the citizens who choose officials that are best suited to represent them; it is a representative government guided by law as enshrined in the country's constitution. As at 2014, there are at least 135 sovereign states that consider themselves to be a republic in at least some form, using the name in their official title.
