It is a requirement that vehicles carrying hazardous material have a Department of Transportation number. It is also a requirement that vehicles with a gross weight of over 10,001 pounds have USDOT numbers, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
It is also necessary for vehicles that carry more than eight passengers to have Department of Transportation numbers on them if one of the vehicle's responsibilities is transporting passengers while receiving compensation. Large delivery trucks that trade, traffic or transport between states in the United States must have these transportation numbers as well, states the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
