What is SSDI?

SSDI stands for Social Security Disability Insurance. This is a program that provides income and protection for workers who have become too disabled to work.
Disability payouts are based on the amount of Social Security taxes a person has paid in during the years he or she has worked. These benefits can also be used to cover other members of a person's family. The benefit amount is calculated by figuring up the amount paid in and the amount of money made on average during the years worked. People applying for these benefits have to meet certain medical requirements to receive the benefits for themselves or any dependents.
